Desert Sage Memory Care in Bend faces state restrictions after a 90-year-old resident, Doris Howard, was found unsupervised in a courtyard on July 14 when temperatures reached 93 degrees.

The Oregon Department of Human Services now limits admissions to one new resident every seven days (with daily updates for the first three days) and requires 15-minute courtyard safety checks (restrictions will lift once safety standards are met).

Housing Works opened College View Apartments on Wednesday, a 59‑unit affordable housing complex in west Bend funded by the Local Innovation and Fast Track Rental fund & partnered with Rooted Homes to plan 40 affordable homes, while residents began moving in by the end of the week.

Two‑bedroom apartments are set at $1,025 a month to help keep housing costs low.
