  • A GoFundMe fundraiser aids Kerri Kurtz (partner and mother to a toddler) following the Jan. 5 death of local auto group member Chris Thomason in a California avalanche near Lake Tahoe; his loss has left Kerri facing financial challenges.  Central Oregon Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • Legends Reloaded is a new classic rock festival featuring tribute bands performing at the Jefferson County Event Complex in Madras on June 19 and 20. Tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. and overnight camping + entry is available for guests 21 and older.  KTVZ
  • Tower Theatre in Bend is hosting three music shows this week — The Ten Tenors perform Friday at 7:30 p.m. with $54-$79 tickets, Hot Buttered Rum returns Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for $14-$24, and International Guitar Night is on today at 7:30 p.m. with $34-$54 tickets.  Bend Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Think Wild, a Bend nonprofit, advises homeowners to schedule humane wildlife services this winter to seal entry points and install habitat features (like nest boxes) that reduce conflicts before spring activity increases.  KTVZ
  • Today, the Forest Service will begin a prescribed burn at the Pace Jackpot area near Skull Hollow Trail and Campground on the Crooked River National Grassland; a 78-acre site (three miles southeast of Highway 26 on Southeast Lone Pine Road) may be temporarily closed.  Bend Bulletin

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tax season began on Monday as Oregon taxpayers filed federal and state returns online to get their kicker refund, with electronic refunds due Feb. 18 and paper refunds in early April. The Department of Revenue advises using its online kicker calculator (with 2024 and 2025 data) to check amounts.  Central Oregon Daily

  • The Bend Police Department announced its 42nd Community Academy, an 11-week course offering an inside look at its operations that starts April 7 with Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and a field day on May 9; applications close at 5 p.m. on March 27.  Bend Bulletin
