COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The High Desert Food and Farm Alliance has partnered with Fill Your Pantry Farmers Market and local farmers to provide free food for residents facing food insecurity in Bend. The event will be held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—$15,000 raised will buy produce at wholesale prices to support the community.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Marine Corps veteran Robert Landers has been named grand marshal for the upcoming Bend Veterans Day Parade scheduled for November 11 in downtown Bend. The parade, themed Service to Nation & Community, will start at 11 a.m. and honor veterans with support from Central Oregon Veterans Outreach & the High Desert Chapter of the Oregon Veteran Motorcycle Association.  KTVZ
  • Bend restaurants and local organizations are helping families affected by the SNAP pause by offering free or discounted meals. Burgerville is providing free meals for children from Nov. 3 to Nov. 9 and Bo’s Bend has a $5 breakfast-for-dinner event on Nov. 6 — additional options include Abe’s Capanna’s Detroit Pan Pizza and other outlets.  Central Oregon Daily
  • The Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative donated $30K from its Emergency Fund to 12 nonprofits that help people get food, including two in Central Oregon—customers can also donate online or in person until November 30 when up to $35K in matching funds will be available.  Central Oregon Daily

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Farewell Markets, a locally based natural grocer, will open on Nov. 22 in Brookswood Plaza in Southwest Bend—taking over the old C.E. Lovejoy’s site that closed in February after 15 years.  Central Oregon Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deschutes County Road Department and the U. S. Forest Service will close Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road at 8 a.m. on November 18 due to high snow accumulation— the roads will remain closed until winter snow is cleared and typically reopen before Memorial Day if weather permits.  County of Deschutes
  • After weeks of uncertainty, the City of Redmond and Deschutes County approved extra funding for a managed camp that will start construction by the end of the month and finish by the end of January — Redmond will pay about $322,559 and the county will cover roughly $353,559. At a joint session on November 3, officials also discussed expanding the county board and addressed local concerns over a park project linked to the new High Desert Ranch subdivision.  KTVZ
  • Deschutes County is asking local businesses to register with 211 info — a fast way to connect SNAP recipients with free food relief. Emergency Manager Ben Duda said the community has stepped up during the pause in SNAP benefits.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Bend Park and Rec District will launch a Public Perception Survey this week—asking selected residents to share their views on parks, trails and community programs. Residents not contacted by phone, text or postcard will later have a chance to complete the online survey.  KTVZ

  • Nine Central Oregon high school soccer teams will play in state playoffs today and Wednesday. In Bend today, three games feature Bend High hosting No.15 Corvallis at 2 p.m.—Mountain View hosting No.9 La Salle Prep at 2 p.m. and Summit hosting No.13 Putnam at 5 p.m.  Bend Bulletin
