COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Oregon quilters sold over 400 handmade quilts Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship to boost funds for the Bend Food Project and The Giving Plate—aiming to exceed last year's $37,403 and help feed local children.   • Families in Bend did not receive their November SNAP benefits on Saturday because of an ongoing government shutdown, and local food banks have seen weekly requests jump from 1–2 to 8–10, as reported by St. Vincent de Paul of Crook County—local grocery partners in Bend and Prineville have increased support to help meet the growing need.  KTVZ

  • Form Pilates, owned by Rachel Day, will open this month at Discovery Corner on NW Skyline Ranch Road near NorthWest Crossing in Bend. The studio joins seven other businesses in the development and will offer personalized classes based on Day’s 11 years of teaching experience — adding a fresh fitness option to the area.  Bend Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU-Cascades will launch a university-wide career accelerator pilot program in spring as administrators design its format using feedback from over 44 community members—faculty, staff, and employer partners. The seven-person team led by Cynthia Engel will work with three education technology companies and use $150,000 in startup funds to integrate the pilot into academic coursework.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KTVZ News is launching its Seismic Shift series this November to show how Central Oregon will prepare for a potential tsunami event along the coast—beginning Nov. 6 with a report on tsunami science and coastal preparedness. The four-part series will also cover inland impacts and local safe haven plans in Deschutes.  KTVZ
  • Deschutes County and Redmond approved extra funding to begin building a 36-site managed homeless camp in east Redmond, awarding a $676,000 construction contract to Taylor NW for a facility with water, electricity and basic services. Officials remain uncertain about the operating model and cost management — key issues to be discussed at a joint meeting on November 3.  Bend Bulletin
