COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bend Witches Paddle will take place Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Deschutes River between the Colorado Avenue bridge and Riverbend Park — the event raises donations for MountainStar Family Relief Nursery to help prevent child abuse and neglect in Central Oregon.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bo’s Bagels in Bend will host a Breakfast for Dinner event on November 6 starting at 5:30 p.m. to support families affected by SNAP cuts by offering breakfast sandwiches for $5 on a one-item-per-person basis (the event aims to provide community support during tough economic times).  KTVZ
  • Two fundraising chili cook-offs will take place in Bend next week to support local nonprofits. The 42nd Annual Chili Feed and Raffle begins Nov. 7 at the Deschutes Historical Museum while Think Wild’s second annual Get Wild Chili-Cook Off runs Nov. 8 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship—featuring live music, multiple chili recipes, and raffle prizes.  Bend Bulletin

  • Bend Fire & Rescue evacuated a downtown building after an exhaust buildup caused a gas leak on NW Franklin Ave — they quickly secured the area to prevent further hazard.  Central Oregon Daily

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Oregrown, the first retail marijuana store in Redmond, will open in early December as it remodels a space at 2127 Highway 97 and awaits a final city inspection in the first week of December—The Flower Room, the city's second dispensary, will start building an 8,000-square-foot shop once permits are approved and is expected to open by mid-April on 4/20.  Source Weekly
  • Zamp Solar said its Bend facility on Jamison Street will close in early November as part of a consolidation that moves solar panel production to facilities in Auburn, Goshen, and Vancouver — employees have been notified and support measures will help them transition.  KTVZ
  • PacificSource laid off roughly 300 workers across Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Washington as part of cost-cutting measures; 265 Oregon employees in Bend, Medford, Portland, Salem and Springfield were affected. The non-union workers received severance and career transition support (the move comes amid rising healthcare and Medicaid costs).  Bend Bulletin
  • Form Pilates will open in December at Discovery Corner in Discovery West at 1216 NW Skyline Ranch Road, suite 100, where the new studio will offer private, duet sessions and small classes capped at five students with advanced reformers—Rachel Day, with 11 years of teaching experience, chose the location to expand her business for Bend’s community.  KTVZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Summit High and Bend Senior High are partnering for their first joint production — Head Over Heels, a jukebox musical featuring The Go-Go’s hit songs and an inspired tale of a royal prophecy. Performances will take place December 5 to 7 and December 11 to 13 at Summit High Auditorium on NW Clearwater Drive with general admission priced at $15 and discounts for students and seniors.  KTVZ

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Oregon Public Utility Commission approved a small rate reduction for Cascade Natural Gas customers that will lower an average residential bill by about $0.86 starting Friday — a change driven by lower natural gas prices and annual filings. Cascade Natural Gas serves over 75,000 customers in the Bend region — with rate adjustments varying by usage and customer type.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bend homebuilders sent letters to the city asking to remove juniper trees from the protected list because they argue keeping them increases homebuilding costs and strains water resources. City officials will revisit the issue while a county commissioner supports removing younger trees — a move that may ease costs and improve resource management.  Bend Bulletin
  • Governor Kotek declared a 60-day food security emergency and directed $5 million to food banks on Wednesday as a federal shutdown ended SNAP benefits for thousands. She urged Oregonians to support their neighbors while state agencies worked under the emergency declaration to deliver food assistance—helping families now and into the holiday season.  KTVZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Summit's boys soccer team won 7-0 over Redmond after scoring six goals in the second half following a 1-0 first-half lead, keeping their undefeated conference record. The Storm will play their final regular season match today at 4 p.m. against Mountain View — they hope to finish the season with a shutout.  Bend Bulletin
