Good morning, Bend. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 5th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About 80 mountain bikers rode Bend trails on Saturday at Wanoga Sno-Park as they supported a cancer fundraiser hosted by Cancer Bike Out—riders hit trails such as Funner, Tiddlywinks, Tyler’s Traverse and Royal Flush while funds were raised for the St. Charles Foundation.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Bend Fire & Rescue hosted a community open house Saturday at its North Fire Station to launch National Fire Prevention Week — families toured fire engines, saw a police SWAT vehicle and a medical helicopter, and watched firefighters use the Jaws of Life. Fire Inspector Jason Kamperman said the event was meant to show the community the agency’s equipment and training.  Central Oregon Daily

BUSINESS NEWS

  • REI is offering the discontinued REI Co-op Trailmade 20 sleeping bag for $82.93 during a clearance sale, and stock is low so shoppers in Bend should act quickly to secure a budget-friendly option for cool, damp nights—its synthetic fill works well even when wet.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Commissioner Adair recalled the Flat Fire that forced thousands to evacuate and urged residents to clear burnable debris, prune trees, and avoid using mulch to lower fire risks. County officials are reviewing fire safety practices to improve future emergency responses (fire officials emphasize proper yard maintenance).  KTVZ
  • The state board dropped nearly 100 offensive names from maps but kept ChinaHat near Newberry Volcano as it did not meet removal criteria. Local Asian American community members say the name carries a negative history and fuels a sense of exclusion—especially given its ties to a local homelessness issue.  Bend Bulletin
  • William Minnix, president of Oregon for the People, has led a petition to recall Governor Tina Kotek that has already gathered over half of the nearly 293,000 signatures required, and he said volunteers in Portland, Salem, and Clackamas County are adding hundreds per day—supporters from all political views are calling for change in tax and spending policies.  KTVZ
  • FEMA is proposing new requirements for communities in the National Flood Insurance Program—shifting focus to protect fish habitat in floodplains and setting a no net loss rule for floodplain development that will affect 31 counties and 230 communities. Communities must submit written comments by Monday, October 6th at 8:59 p.m. to avoid losing eligibility for federal flood insurance.  KTVZ
