CULTURE NEWS

  • Baker Diocese held an ordination and installation ceremony for its new bishop Monday at St. Francis Church in Bend.  Central Oregon Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at the new Catholic high school in Bend began a classical curriculum on Sept 3 that teaches Latin, Euclidean geometry and philosophy to eight students in two classrooms at the St. Francis of Assisi campus—organizers fundraised nearly $500,000 and plan to add drama and dance classes next year—while aiming to keep local high school options alive.  Bend Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews battled a 2,500-acre wildfire that burned mainly on private property northeast of Madras. The human-caused McNamee fire began around noon on Sunday about 7 miles south of Antelope—most efforts focused on its north side.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, September 29th, more than a dozen Oregon mayors—led by Portland’s Mayor Keith Wilson—issued a joint letter rejecting federal plans to deploy the National Guard to Portland and risking residents’ rights. They vowed to block local support for such actions and share legal resources with affected communities.  Bend Bulletin
  • Deschutes County was awarded a $3.4 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for wildfire defense work in the La Pine Rural Fire District. The funds will treat 585 acres of county-owned land and improve 100 miles of county roads—helping fund a fire prevention coordinator for community workshops.  Bend Bulletin
  • On Monday morning in Salem, the Oregon Senate debated House Bill 3991 A—a transportation funding plan that could affect the ODOT maintenance station in Sisters. Lawmakers on both sides argued their positions as a final vote was expected by the end of Monday.  KTVZ
