COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bend Park and Recreation District is finalizing plans for a new art station at Larkspur Park—Griffin Construction was awarded a $3 million contract to build the 4,900-square-foot center after the Old Mill facility ended its lease. Permits will be processed soon so the station will have a soft opening early summer and start official programming in fall.  Bend Bulletin
  • The final free shred event of 2025 will be held today from 10 a.m. to noon at Terrebonne Elementary School's parking lot, 1199 B Ave, in Terrebonne—residents may bring up to four boxes for shredding, access safe medication disposal, retire worn flags, and drop off nonperishable food for donation.  Bend Bulletin

  • Epic Aircraft delivered its 100th certified plane on Friday at its 11th Annual Odyssey Fly-In in Bend—this E1000 AX featuring a commemorative logo will be based in Texas and marks a five-year milestone since the E1000 was delivered in 2020.  KTVZ
  • Dump City Dumplings on Galveston Avenue is renovating its space into The Roundabout Pub — scheduled to open on September 26th. Construction crews were seen installing a pool table — and the owners said they will continue to serve the popular dumplings at the bar and through DoorDash.  KTVZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Central Oregon Builders Association will host an Industry—Education Happy Hour Tuesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Hayden Homes Support Center in Redmond, where regional economist Nicole Ramos will detail a critical shortage of construction workers that may affect housing affordability.  Bend Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Oregon Community College is hosting free Jobfest events on October 2nd and 7th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its Bend and Redmond campuses—offering resume-building workshops in Bend on September 30th in Cascades Hall room 240a and in Redmond on October 6 at the Technology Education Center room 135 from 3 to 4 p.m.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deschutes County is accepting statements of interest from business representatives for the Wolf Depredation Compensation and Financial Assistance Committee; the unpaid two-year role will meet quarterly to guide grant funds for wolf depredation and non-lethal preventive measures. Applicants with expertise in eco-tourism, livestock management, veterinary services or ranching must email a two-paragraph statement by 5 p.m. on Oct. 17.  KTVZ

  • BestCare said they are seeing more patients coming in for kratom use to relieve pain or anxiety, and experts warn that potent forms such as 7-OH may be dangerous—medical director Billie Cartwright said natural does not mean safe. Jillian Fortner’s report airs tonight at 5 on KTVZ News.  KTVZ

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local hiker explored the dust-free trail at Marion Lake near Marion Forks along U.S. Highway 22— the family-friendly route offers a 6-mile round trip with an 800-foot climb that leads past old-growth trees to Lake Ann and a spur to Marion Falls. The hike remains popular this late summer for its easy ground and refreshing waterfall views.  Bend Bulletin

  • Crook County junior Paige Wood returned to Prineville after a life-threatening car accident in August and attended Tuesday’s game at Bend High—her comeback in a wheelchair inspiring those who cheered her on.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend High freshman Kailyn Cooper led her volleyball team with nine kills on Sept. 11—while Mountain View senior Easton Wray contributed 117 receiving yards on Sept. 12—and more than 1,200 Bulletin votes named them Athletes of the Week.  Bend Bulletin
