COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A bronze memorial plaque honoring Barry Washington Jr. will be unveiled in late September or early October near the corner of NW Wall Street — NW Oregon Avenue, where he was fatally shot on Sept. 19, 2021. His family and community chose the design and quickly raised funds for the $3,800 plaque — which will be set on a concrete post to keep the sidewalk clear.  Source Weekly
  • Nearly 70 income-qualified residents now ride e-bikes to work and school using $1,800 vouchers from Commute Options—funded by Pacific Power—with three vouchers still waiting to be picked up from 600 applicants. The second round of the program requires Pacific Power customers earning at or below 80% of the area median income to complete an online safety course before riding.  Central Oregon Daily

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to the Healy Heights Apartment complex late Monday morning and had the fire under control when reporters arrived — the blaze remains under investigation.  KTVZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The OSU Extension office in Redmond unveiled a permanent art installation honoring Liz Douville—a longtime Master Gardener volunteer and gardening columnist who died in 2024—in its demonstration garden on September 5th. The custom steel and aluminum panel was crafted by The Rustic Garden in Madras and co-designed with horticulturist Amy Jo Detweiler, and a dedication ceremony was held on July 8th with family and friends sharing memories.  Bend Bulletin

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported that average gasoline prices in Oregon rose by 22.1 cents to $4.23 on Monday due to regional refinery issues — prices were 26.7 cents higher than last month and 54.7 cents higher than last year.  KTVZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Oregon Community College is joining the Week Without Driving initiative from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 to encourage carpooling, bus rides, and bike trips as fall term starts — the college will host morning meetups at Bend-area coffee shops to share coffee and pastries and promote alternative travel options.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bend city officials announced plans to add new parking restrictions—two-to-four-hour limits, employee spaces, loading zones, and no parking areas—to more neighborhoods by next summer to ease congestion in busy areas. Staff have already been directed to draft parking district plans that will help manage the growing demand on city curbs.  Bend Bulletin
  • A giant crane used on the expansion of the Deschutes County Courthouse is now gone.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Governor Tina Kotek signed three new laws to help consumers by keeping medical debt off credit reports—stopping hidden online fees and unfair auto loans. Car dealers must now give clear details in plain language and all laws will take effect in 2026.  Central Oregon Daily
  • The City of Bend announced Monday that it is asking qualified parties to propose a review of housing permit processes to support a HUD grant aimed at removing obstacles to affordable housing—proposals are due Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. and the selected respondent will complete the work within six months after the agreement is awarded.  KTVZ
