- ➤ Welcoming Week is underway in Bend with events including Culture Jam + a Latino Community Association bike ride that celebrate local culture and languages. The festival runs through Sept. 21. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ After a seven-year break, TEDxBend is set to return with a community event on Sept. 24 from 5:30—7:30 p.m. at The Haven Coworking in Bend, where past speakers Frank Patka and Eric Pickersgill will share their stories to help shape plans for a full-scale conference in 2026. Source Weekly
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Redmond Library, which opened in January, was honored nationally and regionally for its sustainable design — featuring a photovoltaic rooftop array and LEED Platinum certification — as reported by American Libraries and the Cascades East Association of Realtors. The award comes as part of community improvements funded by the Deschutes Public Library system bond measure from 2020. Bend Bulletin
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ In early September, Tygh Redfield replaced an old canal with a modern pivot that sprays water on his hay field to save his crop during dry times—this change is part of a broader shift in Central Oregon as farms update to water-saving systems. Three Sisters Irrigation District and other agencies are funding these projects to help farmers use water more efficiently. Bend Bulletin

- ➤ The city of Bend wrapped up its free e-bike giveaway yesterday when nearly 70 qualified residents received bikes—67 picked them up and three plan to claim theirs as the program aims to cut car use. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ The Deschutes County Courthouse expansion project is moving into framing and interior work as the giant construction crane will be removed this weekend with Bond Street closed Friday through Monday; a large mobile crane plus a smaller crane will work together to dismantle the tower while courthouse operations remain open. Local drivers are advised to use alternate routes to navigate the temporary detour. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ Oregon families are concerned as the Oregon DeafBlind Project will not have its federal grant renewed and the Central Oregon Disability Support Network will drop its federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education—citing language on diversity, equity, and inclusion in its applications. The cuts affect programs that support more than 4,000 families across eight rural counties. KTVZ
- ➤ City contractor K&E Excavation will upgrade the roundabout at Butler Market Road and Wells Acres by starting construction along Butler Market Road from 8th Street to Brinson Boulevard beginning September 22. Eastbound traffic will remain open while westbound lanes are closed and detoured via Brinson Boulevard, and side street access from Roxy Place will close temporarily beginning early October. KTVZ

- ➤ Gov. Tina Kotek said on Thursday she was working to improve access to the COVID-19 vaccine after federal limits and unclear rules left Oregonians struggling to get shots. The governor’s office said five state agencies are urgently exploring cheaper, less disruptive ways to help people, while doctors and pharmacists remain caught in confusion—raising concerns for the upcoming respiratory season. - ➤ Tom Weber—an amateur tour golfer—nearly died on the greens at Sunriver Resort two years ago and returned today to play a full championship round as he thanks the rescue responders and resort for saving his life. Central Oregon Daily
