- ➤ A Bend technology business was named among eight semi-finalists for the upcoming Bend Venture Conference next month—hosted by Economic Development for Central Oregon. The semi-finalists will be narrowed in early October with finalists advancing to the conference on Oct. 16-17. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ First Interstate Bank will close all its branches on Wednesday so that its 3,500 paid workers can volunteer at local nonprofits — they will help assemble harvest kits, deliver freedom stickers and restore children’s books — in Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, Madras and Prineville. The bank has done this for eight years to support community projects. Bend Bulletin

- ➤ Bend Fire & Rescue warned local businesses today about a scam in which individuals posing as firefighters tried to collect donations for bogus promotions—businesses should verify caller information with the department to avoid fraud. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ On Monday, Samson Garner took the stand at the Deschutes County Courthouse in Bend to defend himself against charges of planning a mass shooting at Smith Rock in October 2023. He said he sent an email while intoxicated and suicidal—notes that intrusive nightmares led him to seek help rather than carry out the attack. KTVZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Central Oregon still faces high wildfire risk despite recent rain as dry grass and brush spark 76 fire incidents, including 46 wildfires started by lightning — public fire restrictions remain in effect to help protect communities. KTVZ
- ➤ Officials from the Oregon Department of Forestry said that heavy weekend rain soaked parts of the High Desert but dry fuels and active wildfires keep the fire threat high—Marks Creek and Black Rock Fires continue burning while restrictions remain in effect. Bend Bulletin
