- ➤ The fourth annual Kendall Soapbox Derby will be held this Saturday at River’s Edge Golf Course — teams from across Central Oregon will race their homemade, motorless cars, starting at 2 p.m. and offering food and music for spectators. KTVZ

- ➤ Bend resident Terry Healey will release his second book 'The Resilience Mindset' Tuesday, sharing tools he developed after his cancer battle—lessons he has drawn from his long marketing career. He will hold presentations Sept. 11 at Roundabout Books and Sept. 17 at Barnes and Noble to discuss his book and answer questions. Bend Bulletin
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Heart of Oregon Corps received a $100,000 gift from the Oregon Community Foundation to build a new centralized youth workforce development campus in Redmond. The 3.4 acre site will help train young people from local counties and host a groundbreaking on September 10 from 11 a.m. to noon — the final phase of a $7.3 million project before the campus opens next fall. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Oregon House approved a transportation bill on Sept. 1 that would double the payroll transit tax so that an average worker pays $136 per year instead of $68—vehicle fees and gas taxes will also rise. The Senate will vote on Sept. 17 and the governor is expected to sign the bill if it passes. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ Bend’s Core Area Advisory Board is working on a new spending plan that will shift urban renewal funds from road improvements to direct developers support—aiming to boost redevelopment east of downtown. The board will present its five-year strategy in October, and a multi-million dollar loan is planned for next year to jump-start projects. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ After passing the House on Sept. 1, lawmakers have proposed a transportation bill that will double the payroll transit tax from 0.1% to 0.2%, meaning an average worker earning $68,000 will pay an extra $136 a year and also see higher vehicle registration, title fees, and gas taxes starting January 2026 — the Oregon Senate will vote on the measure on Sept. 17 before it heads to the governor. - ➤ California governor Gavin Newsom, Oregon governor Tina Kotek and Washington governor Bob Ferguson announced they have formed an alliance to coordinate evidence-based vaccine recommendations that will be finalized in the coming weeks—this move aims to address a gap in public health guidance amid federal disruptions. - ➤ Bend’s Central Oregon Surf Team Association and Bend Paddle Trail Alliance will host SURFEST on Sept. 13–14 at McKay Park—where top surfers from across the Northwest will compete for over $10,000 in prizes and enjoy live music, art, and vendors.
