COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cascades Cannery, a nonprofit in Bend, launched with a goal to reduce food waste and support local growers by converting surplus produce into shelf-stable products like jams, sauces, and pickled vegetables. The project will donate preserved foods to food banks and sell products locally—helping to fight food insecurity in the community.  KTVZ
  • The Bend Police Department invites residents to Coffee with a Cop—an event at Backporch Coffee Roasters on October 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.—to ask questions and learn how officers work to keep the community safe.  KTVZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Over Labor Day weekend, Bend Police arrested five people for DUII—one of whom was involved in a crash—and the total DUII arrests this year exceeded 355 as officers warned against driving while intoxicated.  KTVZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting next month, EV buyers in Oregon will face higher prices as state rebates end by Sept 8 and federal tax credits expire by Sept 30 — lawmakers are considering a fee per mile that will add costs further but will not take effect for at least two years.  Bend Bulletin
  • Oregonians looking to buy an electric vehicle face higher costs as state rebates and federal tax credits expire next month and a new per-mile fee may be added for road maintenance—these changes will drive up both purchase and operating costs. Legislators plan to introduce the fee within two years as part of a transportation package that will also raise gas taxes and registration fees.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners announced its fall schedule for joint meetings with the Fair Board, Circuit Court, Planning Commission, and the city councils of Bend, Redmond, Sisters, and La Pine to discuss homelessness, affordable housing, wildfire risk, and siting a future county landfill. Meetings will be held from Sept. 9th to Nov. 3rd and are open to the public in person or online — agendas are shared at least 24 hours in advance.  County of Deschutes
  • Fire districts in Sisters, Cloverdale and Black Butte Ranch banned all recreational burning from 12:01 a.m. on September 3rd to lower wildfire risk + the ban remains until further notice and covers all open fires except portable cooking stoves.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Oregon lawmakers are teaming up to propose a constitutional amendment that will ban law enforcement from covering their faces & the proposal will be introduced in the 2026 short session with a vote on it later. The amendment seeks to make it easier to identify officers and could face legal challenges under federal law.  Bend Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Deschutes County and the Central Oregon Suicide Prevention Alliance are hosting community events in September to support National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and offer crisis resources. Events include suicide prevention training today at 1 p.m. at The Cottage, an Out of the Darkness Walk on Sept 6, a 988 Day on Sept 8, and a candlelight vigil on Sept 11 (county commissioners declared the month on Sept 3).  Bend Bulletin

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Today, the historic O’Kane Building on Oregon and Bond in downtown Bend is for sale for $9.7 million and offers retail space and offices with long-time tenants. Built in 1916 by Hugh O’Kane and covering 24,473 square feet, the building—known for its original design and friendly ghost rumors—seeks a buyer skilled in restoring old buildings.  Bend Bulletin
