  • Protesters gathered in Redmond and Bend yesterday on Labor Day to support workers and protest billionaire influence—using signs, flags, and horns to call on leaders to protect middle class rights.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bristow’s Barber Shop in Sisters held its second annual back-to-school event, offering free haircuts, supplies, and over 300 backpacks for local kids—owner James Wilson said the giving will continue in future events. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a smoke air quality advisory until 11 a.m. PDT today for southern Deschutes County due to wildfires, and locals are advised to limit outdoor activity and follow medical advice if needed.  Central Oregon Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chesterton Academy Mater Dei, Central Oregon's first Catholic high school, is opening this fall with classes starting on September 3. Located at 2450 NE 27th Street, the school offers small class sizes — appealing to families seeking a faith-filled education — and an introductory tuition of $2,400.  KTVZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, crews near Sisters increased the Flat Fire's containment to 52% over 23,346 acres as they worked to repair fire lines and reduce erosion risks. Evacuation orders remain for Deschutes and Jefferson counties—public lands around Steamboat Rock, Buckhorn OHV and trails at Crooked River Ranch have reopened.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon House passed a transportation tax bill with a 36—12 vote Monday and sent it to the Senate—where a vote is expected on Wednesday to fund road repairs and prevent layoffs at ODOT. Lawmakers say the measure is only a temporary fix to keep roads maintained and services running.  Central Oregon Daily

  • Bend locals enjoyed a cooler, clearer summer that gave them more time to relax outdoors as Labor Day marked the end of the season. Many tried slacklining at Drake Park, mountain biking, and floating on the Deschutes River — and some noted occasional wildfire smoke.  Bend Bulletin
