- ➤ The Emigrant Fire is burning over 19,000 acres in Lane and Douglas counties west of Crescent Lake and southwest of Diamond Peak with zero-percent containment and is affecting air quality in Central Oregon. Firefighters are using aviation resources and ground crews to set up indirect containment lines as the fire enters mixed-age vegetation — a shift that may slow its spread while hunting areas remain closed for safety. - ➤ Friday evening football season openers saw Summit beat Sprague 36-26, Mountain View defeat Springfield 42-13, Redmond win 26-12 over McNary, and Culver shut out Irrigon 50-0—while Caldera and Madras lost. Summit’s junior quarterback Andrew Guthrie threw three touchdown passes as key players made important plays, and teams will face new matchups next week. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ The Cascade Lakes Relay is a 216-mile team race from Diamond Lake to Bend that offers multiple formats — including a 132-mile relay and a 94-mile walk relay for a range of runners. Jamie Goldberg, a first-time participant who ran legs of 8, 5, and 2 miles, said the varied terrain and nighttime segments made the race accessible while registration for 2026 will run from Aug. 1 through early summer. - ➤ Bend High volleyball team, nicknamed the Lava Bears, is reloading for the new season as they prepare to compete at the Sheldon Invite on Tuesday—coach Kristin Cooper said the team will work hard to build a strong bond and chase a league championship. - ➤ The fifth annual Red Line Rally mountain biking contest took place on Saturday at Mt. Bachelor—featuring local youth riders and seasoned professionals who tackled a trail with a jump called the Moon Booter.
