BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bend’s Haven Bagels is doubling its space at Reed South—adding more seating, an extra bathroom, and a larger kitchen with renovations finishing in about two weeks—while the husband-and-wife team plans a second shop on the west side and a move into a new east side baking facility in about six weeks. The expansion follows the bakery’s first anniversary and strong community support for its organic, non-GMO bagels.  Bend Bulletin

CULTURE NEWS

  • Memoirist and short story writer Hannah Pittard will read from her work at OSU-Cascades at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in the atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall in Bend—she will sign books after the reading and registration is requested for this free event.  Bend Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Zoo rescued 19 endangered Mazama newts from Crater Lake with help from the National Park Service and High Desert Museum to launch its first breeding effort. The newts are now in a lab that copies the lake's water and temperature—staff are monitoring them and may release their offspring back into the lake to fight invasive crayfish.  Bend Bulletin
  • Commercial harvesters will start picking Matsutake mushrooms in Deschutes National Forest on Sept. 2 after obtaining required permits, maps and following strict tool rules+ a special campground near Crescent Lake opened on Aug. 22 to support harvesters with valid permits, while cash payments will only be processed on opening day.  Central Oregon Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon lawmakers doubled the funds in the state energy assistance program from $20 million to $40 million each year to help low-income households pay electric bills — eligible households must earn 60% or less of the state’s median income, and the new funds start Jan 1.  The Oregonian
  • Deschutes County has set aside $125,000 for fuel reduction grants to help local communities cut wildfire risk. Residents can apply online starting Sept. 1 through 5 p.m. on Sept. 30 — grant awards generally range from $100 to $5,000 and cover projects like equipment rental and contracting fees.  KTVZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Deschutes County urges parents to verify that their children have completed seven required vaccinations before school starts so students can attend classes without interruption—health departments and school-based clinics are available to help with scheduling.  County of Deschutes
