COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Prineville residents are organizing fundraisers to help 16-year-old Paige Wood, who was seriously injured in a car crash a few weeks ago and is recovering in the hospital. Local businesses are hosting events including a BBQ that raised over $1,000 and a Dillons Grill fundraiser on Wednesday—along with a GoFundMe that has collected over $85,000—to support her recovery.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews work to contain the Flat Fire at just under 22,000 acres while Think Wild Central Oregon offers tips to help wildlife cope with the blaze. The nonprofit advises leaving fresh water for animals and keeping pets indoors—measures that protect species from smoke and heat.  KTVZ
  • A flat fire burned through a bird sanctuary and destroyed parts of the Native Bird Care center near Whychus Canyon, forcing residents like Elise Wolf to flee and prompting over 1,200 firefighters to battle a blaze that has grown to more than 22,000 acres — nearly 4,000 homes remain at risk.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tax officials are asking Oregonians to fill out a free online survey by Sept. 5 to help decide if the IRS Direct File program that started in January 2025 will continue. The Oregon Department of Revenue urges residents to share their views on ease of use, security, and return accuracy — key factors for Congress to review.  The Oregonian
  • The city of Bend said Franklin Avenue near Juniper Park will close in part starting Sept. 2 for about four months so workers can build protected bike lanes and wider sidewalks from Fourth Street to Eighth Street—one lane will remain open during construction. The road will be fully open by early 2026 aside from a few days in April for paving work.  Bend Bulletin
  • The Deschutes County District Mapping Advisory Committee will begin work in September to draft commissioner district boundaries after voters expanded the Board of Commissioners in Fall 2024 — the seven community members will hold an orientation meeting on Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. at the Deschutes Service Building and then meet weekly this fall to map districts for ballot review in 2026.  KTVZ
