- ➤ The Giving Plate will relaunch its weekend food program as Kids Corner Snack Packs when the new school year starts in September—formerly known as Backpacks for Bend, it now targets children at risk of hunger and directs families to visit the Kids Corner market for further food support. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On August 14 at 9:49 p.m., a head-on crash on Highway 97 south of Bend killed a Bend woman and injured six people, including four children—traffic halted for about three hours while emergency teams responded. KTVZ
- ➤ A Bend woman, Felicia Nicholson, was killed when her car drifted into oncoming traffic in a head-on collision on Highway 97 Thursday night—State Police say an Oregon City family including Earl, Erin Christison and their four children was taken to the hospital and the highway was closed for several hours as the investigation continued. - ➤ Bend-born Bonta Gelato opened its first Portland scoop shop on Aug. 15 in the Pearl District on N.W. 10th Ave + offering Italian-style gelato made with farm-fresh ingredients like roasted strawberries, peanut butter, and brownies. Yelp named the shop Oregon’s Best Ice Cream Shop + and it is open daily from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Bend Bulletin
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The city of Bend will host a preconstruction open house today from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Hollinshead Barn to review plans for the new Butler Market Road/Wells Acres Road roundabout—construction is set to begin in early to mid-September. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ Bend is starting the design process to widen the roundabout at 15th Street and Reed Market Road, with a public open house scheduled Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The $1.5 million project, set for completion in 2027, will allow two cars to use the circle at once and add button-operated flashing beacons to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. - ➤ A disabled veteran from Powell Butte said he and his wife face high medical bills after losing VA benefits when they turned 65—he criticized the unclear communication from the VA, and another veteran described the system as too complex and slow to respond. Both veterans say the confusing process leaves them without the support they were promised. KTVZ
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Crook County High’s athletic programs move to Class 5A because of a rise in student enrollment and will rejoin the Intermountain Conference to compete with Bend and Redmond schools this fall. Coach Pard Smith said the team is ready to earn respect — and athletic director Rob Bonner explained that the new schedule will reduce long travel times and allow more classroom time. Bend Bulletin
