COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Deschutes County Commission approved a lease for the Mountain View Community Development project in Redmond — the project will create 75 cottage-style homes on 9.5 acres for disabled people, with site work set to begin this fall and construction scheduled for spring. Residents will pay 30% of their income in rent, and funding comes from Oregon Housing & Community Services along with a planned $3 million grant application from the Federal Home Loan Bank.  Bend Bulletin

CRIME NEWS

  • The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office rescued 21 additional toy Australian shepherds from a Tumalo property after neighbors tipped authorities about hidden dogs, bringing the total rescued to 33 and including 15 puppies—now cared for at the humane society—while investigators add a charge against David De Persio for interfering with a peace officer as the case continues.  Bend Bulletin
  • Portland man Samson Zebturiah Garner, 41, is set to begin his trial on Monday in Deschutes County Circuit Court after being arrested on Oct. 19 for allegedly planning to shoot rock climbers at Smith Rock during the 2023 Craggin’ Classic—he faces charges including four counts of attempted murder and multiple felony counts.  Bend Bulletin
  • A Redmond woman, Jessica Andersch, admitted on Thursday in court that she stabbed her mother to protect her son — the judge postponed her plea to Oct. 1 and granted her request to attend the next hearing in person while she remains held without bail.  KTVZ
  • A Bend man was stabbed in the lip early Wednesday during a loud argument at an apartment near Worthy Brewing, and police arrested his 19-year-old brother Marcus Randall Slocum near Pilot Butte at 1:27 a.m.—neighbors reported the dispute and a SWAT search led to his detention.  Bend Bulletin

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hunter Noack, a professional pianist featured recently in The New York Times, will return to Central Oregon in September to present his outdoor 'In a Landscape' concerts at Fort Rock, Summer Lake, Sunriver and Drake Park—marking the series' 10th anniversary. The concerts will offer live classical music in natural settings that let audiences enjoy both art and nature.  Bend Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners celebrated legislative wins that include $3.1 million to build a youth mental health facility in Redmond—this funding comes with matching support from the Oregon Health Authority and a $750k grant to construct a 15-bed center by fall. The facility will shorten travel for kids needing urgent care and help families avoid long drives for treatment.  Central Oregon Daily
