Summit Health and Central Oregon Holiday Toy Drive partnered with Family Access Network Tuesday to distribute more than 200 backpacks and school supplies to Bend-area families before school started.
The event brought relief to parents and ensured students had the items they needed for the new school year.
Central Oregon Villages will move its emergency shelter from behind Desert Streams Church to a city-owned property behind the fire station this fall — a mile and a half away — after completing utility work by November.
Officials will host open houses later this year to introduce the new facility.
Oregonians can donate their empty cans and bottles to support wildfire relief as the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative matches contributions up to $25,000 through Sept.
30. The funds will assist nonprofits aiding firefighters & communities impacted by wildfires.
Sunriver Art Fair returns at the Village at Sunriver this weekend as 80 artists showcase jewelry, photography, paintings and more.
The event, a fundraiser for the Sunriver Women's Club (Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), gives locals a chance to view art.
Smokey the Bear's 82nd birthday celebration will be held on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cascade Lakes Welcome Station (18500 Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway near milepost 7) with photo opportunities, kid-friendly activities and birthday cupcakes at noon; the event is free and sponsored by Discover Your Northwest and Deschutes National Forest.
Sunriver Music Festival runs from Monday, Aug.
10 through Thursday, Aug. 20 in Sunriver and Bend. The classical music series features American composers along with works by Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Mendelssohn and includes a Family Concert at SHARC and a Pops Concert at the Tower Theatre.
Mount Hood Meadows remains under a level 3 evacuation order from Aug.
4 due to the growing 34,659-acre Grasshopper Fire + crews are reinforcing control lines while additional closures affect nearby recreation areas.
Crews graded Forest Road 2050 in the Akawa fire area on Monday and will grade Wilt Road today—addressing the final 15% containment as incident command transfers back by Friday.
Evacuation orders have lifted but closures remain to limit recreation in the 27,491-acre area 13 miles northeast of Sisters.
Crooked River Ranch Fire and Rescue received a grant from OSFM that paid for one extra firefighter each day to help manage both local calls and statewide wildfire deployments.
The funding, focused on rural districts, strengthened the team’s response to fires and other emergencies + regular incidents.
