  • A champion homing pigeon named Napoleon escaped from 12-year-old Thomas Dawson’s enclosure at the Deschutes County Fair and flew 22 miles back to Bend in roughly six hours. The bird was never trained for long trips—prompting the Dawsons to vow training their birds in the future.  Central Oregon Daily

CRIME NEWS

  • Kirk Raymond Reed, 36, was arrested Sunday after police tracked his car on U.S. Highway 97 in connection with a July 25 stabbing at an ARCO gas station in south Bend + witnesses said the 33-year-old victim was treated and taken to St. Charles Bend in stable condition.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bill Minnix, a La Pine resident, started a recall effort against Governor Tina Kotek after the Secretary of State’s Office approved his petition on Friday—letting him and Oregon For The People begin collecting voter signatures. Supporters must gather 292,933 signatures by October 27th—if verified and if the governor does not resign within five days, a special recall election will be held.  KTVZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Oregon is awarding nearly $1.8M in grants to 37 community groups and licensed insurance agents to offer free help enrolling in private health insurance through OregonHealthCare.gov until 2027—two of the awards serve Central Oregon.  Central Oregon Daily

  • Bend teen Nathaniel Perullo (17) competed in his first international climbing event in Finland last week and placed 24th; he was the only U.S. male to reach the semifinals.  Central Oregon Daily
