Good morning, Bend.
📰 Economy
Oregon recorded 52 workplace deaths in 2024, with half involving motor vehicles and risky jobs like construction, truck driving, and logging according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Improved safety measures and fewer workers in hazardous roles kept the state’s rate 20% below the national average.
🌲 Environment
On Saturday, the Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team took command of the 27,429-acre Akawa Butte Fire 13 miles northeast of Sisters and raised containment to 85%.
Crews now mop up remaining heat and urge the public to follow closures (and evacuations) to keep safe.
🏛️ Government
After initially denying aid, FEMA approved funding on Friday—covering firefighting costs for the Rowe Creek complex fire in Crook and Jefferson counties.
The blaze has burned 313,439 acres and is 57% contained in central Oregon.
