COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, over 100 Powell Butte residents gathered to protest a planned 500 kilovolt transmission line that would run through ten miles of prime farm and ranch lands. PacifiCorp stated it is considering four alternative routes — it hopes the project will be operational by 2032 while locals warned the line could harm their property.  Bend Bulletin
  • Today the Deschutes County Fair in Redmond marks 105 years and attracts thousands while generating over $50 million annually, with profits reinvested in facility upgrades and local nonprofit support. Redmond officials are planning roadway improvements to ease traffic+ support everyday travel during the fair, which runs through August 3.  KTVZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday evening, a fire destroyed a 3,000-square-foot garage/shop under construction in Woodside Ranch south of Bend—fire officials said the blaze appears accidental even though extensive damage made it impossible to determine a cause, and the building, valued at $300,000, is a complete loss.  KTVZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Big Ed's Artisan Bread of Bend is a family-run bakery offering fresh-baked goods including loaves, English muffins, pies, and brownies at its retail space on 601 NE 1st Street. The business has served Central Oregon for over 12 years—its products are available in more than 150 spots across the region and beyond.  KTVZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Allison Clemens, the missing juvenile last seen near Alfalfa Market Road three miles east of Bend, has been found safe and is now reunited with her family as the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office confirmed.  KTVZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the Deschutes County Fair, 4-H kids care for pigs and learn life and business skills — they will auction their animals on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfire season in Oregon started early this year when the Roweena and Fairy fires began in early June, a change from last year's season that burned millions of acres and had six mega-fires. Officials say lightning, dry weather and over 300 human-caused fires have raised concerns while on protected land 578 fires burned 12,533 acres compared to more than 10 times that amount last year + nearly $350 million was spent on fire response in 2024.  KTVZ
  • Lightning from Tuesday spurred several new wildfires in Central Oregon on Wednesday, including Incident 667 — which burned 27 acres southwest of Mackey Mountain as crews responded with engines and overhead staff. Firefighters contained most fires while two remained under active suppression and are preparing for more lightning strikes.  KTVZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • An 80-acre estate on Dodds Road in Bend sold for $5.38 million on July 30 in an auction with a starting bid of $3.75 million—The property had been on the market for about a year. The estate also has a large home with five bedrooms and six bathrooms and offers views of the Cascade peaks.  Bend Bulletin
