COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Balloons Over Bend is a three-day event that fills the skies with hot air balloons — it kicks off today with a 6:15 a.m. sunrise launch at Jewell Elementary School and will continue through Saturday and Sunday with free public viewings — including Night Glow festivals in Bend and Redmond.  KTVZ
  • Shepherd’s House Ministries has urgently requested bottled water donations for its A Place at the Table initiative to help people facing dehydration during high summer heat. Donations including cases or pallets can be dropped off at Bend’s 1854 NE Division St and Redmond’s 1350 S Hwy 97—monetary contributions are also welcome.  Central Oregon Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An investigation by the Secretary of State’s Office found that Oregon’s Preschool Promise program wasted $1.4 million in grant payments between 2021 and 2024—state education agencies did not check enrollment rules properly. The report said some providers received funds even when they were closed, funds that could have helped serve more children.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state police certification board stripped Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp of his certification for life after he lied about his education and hid his firing from a California police department—he is contesting the decision and will retire at the end of the month.  The Oregonian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Central Oregon Pediatric Associates, the first local pediatric office that grew from one doctor to 29 providers, is marking 50 years in Bend. The group will host a community celebration at Alpenglow Park from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday — featuring bouncy houses, cotton candy and more — to honor its service.  Central Oregon Daily

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New owners of the Boss Rambler property on Galveston Avenue proposed a 12,000-square-foot two-story commercial building with office space above a dining area and submitted initial planning documents to the city on June 26—developers still need to file further documents and secure permits before construction can begin. The planned project is part of changes in the corridor as the city prepares street upgrades to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.  Bend Bulletin

  • Former Summit Storm outfielder Slater de Brun signed a rookie deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday for $4 million after being chosen as the top high school outfielder in the 2025 MLB Draft—his signing marks a major step toward a professional career.  The Oregonian
