J.R. Montgomery works at Family Kitchen in downtown Bend where he donates clothes and backpacks to help people facing homelessness and substance use issues.

He uses his own past struggles—including living in his van—to fuel his volunteer work while he now lives in a temporary cabin in Central Oregon Villages and is trying to help a friend get into rehab.

A group of six went over Dillon Falls on the Deschutes River Saturday near Bend, leaving three survivors, two fatalities, and two people still missing—authorities have not released identities and search efforts continue.
