Volunteers from Team Depot worked on The Juniper House on Saturday using a $5,500 Home Depot Foundation grant to improve the property.
The project upgraded the lawn, barn area, chicken coop and privacy fence to support transitional housing for women.
Base Camp opened its 8,000 sqft food cart lot on Bend’s west side Saturday at 9 a.m. with 12 carts, a full bar, and indoor and outdoor gathering spaces for games and live music — owners said a grand opening celebration will be held next month.
Fires have continued to spread in Central Oregon after the fire marshal invoked an emergency act on Friday into Saturday, directing teams to the Akawa Butte and Brewer fires+ evacuation orders remain in effect as heat, winds, and challenging terrain hamper firefighting efforts.
A wildfire started on July 16 at 2:15 p.m. one mile southeast of Paulina and burned about 3000 acres while threatening structures — fire crews using engines, dozers, hand crews, and overhead support built a dozer line and noted increased fire behavior as of July 18.
A local rafting trip on the Lower Deschutes faced mishaps including a rattlesnake near camp and a broken trailer, but a skilled local mechanic quickly fixed the trailer—allowing the trip to continue safely despite 90° heat.
