ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pacific Power reported that Bend and Redmond faced 11 outages from May 1 to July 8, including 8 enhanced safety settings and one Public Safety Power Shutoff aimed at reducing wildfire risk—outages caused by environmental triggers and equipment issues led to nearly two-hour disruptions for some residents. The company explained that crews conduct inspections and repairs during daylight hours and wait for safe weather before restoring power.  Source Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Five candidates submitted letters of interest to be appointed interim Deschutes County sheriff as Sheriff Kent van der Kamp will step down on July 31. The candidates are Undersheriff Aaron Wells, Detective Ty Rupert, Detective Lt. James McLaughlin, former Captain Deron McMaster, and Deputy Police Chief Paul Kansky—two of whom did not mention any negative media reports in their submissions.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Kaitlin Lovell becomes the new director of the Department of State Lands starting early August—she was unanimously chosen on July 9 to lead 130 staff, manage over $116 million and oversee 680,000 acres of state-owned land in Bend and Salem. With 18 years at Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services and a background in law and science, Lovell is set to balance conservation, development and public school funding.  Central Oregon Daily

  • A new housing development for middle-income families is set to open on Bend’s east side where Parkside Place will offer 3-bedroom homes starting at $474,990. The first houses will be ready for sale this fall—providing affordable options for workers like nurses and teachers.  Central Oregon Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the 123rd PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship begins at Sunriver Resort with qualifying rounds held on Tuesday and Wednesday on the resort’s Woodlands and Meadows courses—Bend defending champion Sam Renner is among the top contenders. The event will narrow to the lowest 64 players for single-elimination match play, with competitors battling in 18-hole matches and a 36-hole final on Sunday.  Bend Bulletin
