COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 50 volunteer members of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Corps received the Silver Sparky Award from the state fire marshal for their fire prevention efforts in Sisters and Camp Sherman since 2015—completing 82 smoke alarm calls, 170 home assessments, and training 171 people. The award recognizes their dedication to protecting local communities.  KTVZ

CRIME NEWS

  • The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help finding 13-year-old Stella McKay, who was last seen near Tetherow Butte in northwest Redmond after leaving her home and is described as 5 feet tall and weighing about 85 pounds with blonde hair and brown eyes, and anyone with information should call dispatch at (541) 693-6911 immediately.  KTVZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Bend welcomes two popular events this weekend as Summer Fest begins today with hundreds of vendors, several concerts—and food, while First Friday returns after its July postponement to draw thousands of visitors.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Rev. Thomas Hennen was introduced Thursday as the bishop-elect for the Diocese of Baker—covering Central and Eastern Oregon—and he will be ordained on Sept. 18 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Bend. He succeeds Bishop Liam Cary after Pope Leo XIV accepted his resignation on July 10.  KTVZ
  • The High Desert Museum will host its Welcome the Night event on July 16 to showcase nocturnal insects, bats, and owls from 6:30 p.m.—9:30 p.m. Visitors will use a card at 17 stations to earn a prize.  Central Oregon Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cascades East Transit will launch Route 8, a new pilot bus route in northeast Bend starting July 14 that operates from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday from Hawthorne Station with 19 trips and 12 stops (with adjustments planned for roadwork) and an express run to Cascade Village Shopping Center (serving Trader Joe’s, Best Buy, and Dick’s Sporting Goods) to better connect commuters with jobs, schools, and affordable housing.  Bend Bulletin
  • Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Captain William Bailey was placed under investigation after making critical comments during a two-hour radio interview on June 20—this probe, which started on June 26, is ongoing amid political tension following former Sheriff Kent van der Kamp’s resignation effective July 31—Bailey said he would not apply for the interim sheriff position.  Bend Bulletin
  • ODOT delivered layoff notices to 483 workers on Monday and closed several rural maintenance stations, including the Sisters shop in Deschutes County—21 local employees will lose their jobs by July 31 as remaining crews must cover larger areas and slower winter services are expected. Lawmakers are working on a funding deal to restore essential resources before winter impacts worsen.  Bend Bulletin
