Good morning, Bend. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • A Prineville man pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted murder, and other charges following a June 27 attack—one that left one man dead and another injured—and his next hearing is set for July 24.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • ODFW has set new fishing rules on the Lower Deschutes River through July 14 to protect summer steelhead — the daily limit now allows just one hatchery steelhead catch from lower Moody Rapids to the I-84 Bridge amid low Columbia River forecasts.  Bend Bulletin
  • ODFW's Ochoco Office in Prineville is asking locals to report porcupine sightings as part of a two-year project — a study to track their population, habits and causes of mortality — and will offer volunteer training sessions with the High Desert Museum.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Bend announced yesterday that it partnered with Veo to bring 300 shareable e-bikes to the community with the fleet rolling out this week—supporting a permanent bike share program approved by the City Council in April.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Oregon lawmakers passed a bill in June that cut $100 million from eviction prevention and legal aid after a revenue shortfall was revealed. The cuts come as Central Oregon sees rising homelessness and record cost-burdened renters—adding pressure on local shelters and affordable housing efforts.  Central Oregon Daily
  • ODOT began laying off workers after the legislature failed to pass a transportation funding bill, and Deschutes County Commissioner Phil Chang said rural areas like Sisters will soon see fewer workers and equipment. Union leaders warned that slower response times and reduced roadside safety will affect travel this winter — with further cuts expected in early 2026 unless new funding is approved.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Five union-approved candidates spoke at a July 7 forum at the Elks Lodge in Bend to share their ideas for the interim sheriff role and promise to rebuild trust and run the office fairly—each candidate outlined plans to fix past issues and address budget challenges. The county commissioners will choose a new sheriff by July 31 to lead until the 2026 election.  Source Weekly
