  • The early rain did not stop Friday’s pet parade in downtown Bend as pets wearing red, white and blue marched to celebrate Independence Day. The century-old event featured many animals including dogs, chickens, horses and a kangaroo — with a small crowd playfully calling for cats to join in — marking a fun start to the holiday.  Bend Bulletin

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday afternoon near Terrebonne, Clayton and Jeaneva used a hose and shovel to stop a brush fire at NW Lower Bridge Way and NW Quail Road+ the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said their quick action helped prevent a larger wildfire amid dry conditions.  Central Oregon Daily

  • The Vegetable Man produce stand on SE 3rd Street in Bend has been a family-run business for over 40 years — started by a father in 1983 and later taken over by his children in 2012 — known for offering produce picked just hours before sale. The stand is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Reed Lane.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local effort led by Sheriff's Deputy Neil Marchington is underway to remove graffiti from Central Oregon caves and restore their natural beauty. Volunteers from Oregon High Desert Grotto use specialized equipment to clean the walls without harming the environment.  Central Oregon Daily

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • David H. Scott, a 79-year-old Vietnam veteran who survived colon cancer, continues to pursue his passion for paddling on rivers despite ongoing health challenges. He plans to finish 600 miles on the Mackenzie River in August with a veteran partner — a testament to his unyielding determination.  Bend Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cash Fred—a 14-year-old rider from Tumalo—finished sixth in bull riding and eighth in bareback riding at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Des Moines on July 4. He won the state championship in June and said he plans to compete in high school rodeos after aging out of the Jr. High association.  Bend Bulletin
  • 17-year-old Bend climber Nathaniel Perullo became the national bouldering champion in his age group last weekend — his win means he will compete at the Youth World Championships in Helsinki starting July 28.  Central Oregon Daily
