COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sure Shot Fireworks and fire officials are finishing up work at the top of Pilot Butte for a fireworks show set to begin today at 10 p.m.—the display will last more than 20 minutes and the butte will reopen to the public on July 6th.  KTVZ
  • The Humane Society of Central Oregon has offered safety tips for the Bend Pet Parade today, advising pet owners to bring plenty of water, a bowl, and cooling accessories such as strollers or wagons to keep pets off hot asphalt. They warn that if pets show signs of overheating — heavy panting or seeking shade — owners should leave the parade route and seek immediate care if needed.  Central Oregon Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today at 10 p.m., Pilot Butte will light up the sky with the annual Fourth of July fireworks show, featuring dozens of mortars arranged by Sure Shot Fireworks and watched by locals within a 20-mile radius. City fire crews and volunteers will keep the area safe — measures include pre-show site preparation and post-display cleanup.  Bend Bulletin
  • Sunriver Music Festival will host international pianist Vitaly Starikov—an award-winning silver medalist from the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition—on August 12 and 13 in Sunriver as part of its August 2–13 concert series that also includes events in Bend. His performance marks a key highlight of the festival's 48th season of classical music.  Source Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 1, Oregon launched the Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act that gives communities more recycling options. The law made producers pay fees to upgrade equipment, improve collection and support fair wages—helping the state manage waste more responsibly.  Source Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deschutes County crews will chip and fog seal roads in the La Pine area from July 6 to 12 (including South Century, Lazy River, Big River, Seevers, Stage Stop, Bonanza and Fall River) while flaggers manage single-lane closures with up to 20-minute delays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; city and state agencies will close key sections of Knott, Tumalo Reservoir, Skyliners, Deschutes Market and U.S. 97 as well as forest roads for utility work, roundabout construction and bridge repairs with detour routes in place and weather conditions subject to change work hours.  County of Deschutes

  • Central Oregon Health Council today launched the Be Well Central Oregon campaign to support the 2025—2029 Regional Health Improvement Plan by inviting partners to complete a Request for Information survey that will guide future regional health efforts. The campaign aims to build partnerships, share resources and align health projects to meet the region's evolving needs.  Source Weekly

  • A couple recently hiked the Peter Skene Ogden Trail near McKay Crossing Campground and enjoyed a four-hour outing that featured several waterfalls, a natural waterslide on Paulina Creek, and scenic wildflower views. They noted local conservation efforts at the creek’s meeting with the Little Deschutes River — a detail that underscores the region’s enduring outdoor appeal.  Bend Bulletin
