COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bend Pet Parade will start 30 minutes early on July 4 with a 9:30 a.m. beginning and an 8:30 a.m. lineup at Harmon Park where the route follows Newport Avenue to Drake Park — organizers say the change helps protect people and pets from the mid-day sun.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend offers nine off-leash dog parks that give residents many choices for letting their dogs play freely—parks include amenities like an agility course at Alpenglow Community Park and river access at Riverbend Park—and each option provides space suited to different needs.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend Park and Recreation District will hold the July 4th Pet Parade on July 4th with lineup at 8:30 a.m. at Harmon Park and the parade set to begin at 9:30 a.m.—over 8,000 people are expected to participate and volunteers will help with route monitoring and clean-up.  KTVZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • La Catrina Chingona, a new Mexican restaurant and tequila bar in Terrebonne at 400 NW Smith Rock Way, held its soft opening on Thursday and is open today to the public—its grand opening will be on July 1 with an expanded menu.  Bend Bulletin
  • Owens Corning’s wood products plant in Prineville will lay off all 184 workers starting Aug. 25 as it winds down operations for a full closure in November. Prineville city manager Steve Forrester said the city will work with the company and affected workers to find new jobs — a plan to ease the transition.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp’s resignation became official Thursday night — he will leave office July 31 as mounting pressure from local officials prompted his decision. The Board of Commissioners will outline plans for an interim sheriff today.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Brian Rankin, Bend's Senior Strategist, explained his role in guiding the city's growth by addressing housing, transportation, and the urban growth boundary. Host Aaron Switzer interviewed Rankin about his journey from music to urban planning (including lessons learned from his work in the City of Sisters) and how these experiences shape current plans for Bend.  Source Weekly

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction is underway on Cascade Landing—located off Highway 97 at Atwood Drive and Ponderosa Street—to build 98 affordable units today while a second phase will add 96 more units next spring, with the project scheduled for completion in 2027 on a 40-acre site that will also offer retail space, a community center and a park.  Central Oregon Daily
