Oregon Adaptive Sports in Bend mourns their dedicated volunteer Kellie Standish, who after a decade of guiding athletes with disabilities died in a bike accident in California on June 11 — her legacy will continue to inspire local outdoor programs.
The musical 'Rosie the Riveter' debuts this week at the Tower Theatre in Bend — created over 20 years by local Marilyn Magness, it honors WWII factory workers and features 34 actors.
Five real Rosies, aged 100 to 106, are expected to attend.
Bend High finishes Phase 1 renovations of its campus — showcasing a new Ninth St. entrance with a backlit bear claw and a bright B hall for classrooms.
Students will see the updated facilities this fall as work on additional buildings and a parking lot continues.
Firefighters halted a brush fire on NW Lone Pine Road east of Terrebonne Wednesday night as wind drove it south, limiting its spread to 4 to 5 acres.
Crews continued containment work while the cause remained unknown.
The Deschutes National Forest wildfire rating increased to extreme Thursday after officials noted an earlier high rating in Bend and Deschutes County, and public lands now ban open fires while allowing campfires only in developed campgrounds.
It is a clear sign of growing fire concerns this season.
Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council opened Oregon Weaver Award applications for micro-grants of $2,500 to $5,000 aimed at nonprofits and individuals from Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson counties or the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs; info sessions are held on June 22 in Redmond — and June 23 online.
On Tuesday the council approved a climate pollution fee on natural gas appliances in newly built homes so that a typical mid-sized home faces an added fee of about $2,100.
The fee will fund future electrification efforts as final details are expected to be set early next year.
The Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium returns Sunday in downtown Bend with races from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Streets close at 9 a.m. for contests including elite races, an All Bikes Ride, and the Bend Classic Mile Run — organized by the Horner Cycling Foundation.
The Boys and Girls Club on Wall Street in downtown Bend will host the Beats and Buckets 3-on-3 basketball tournament from June 26 to 28.
June 26 features contests and a skills challenge, while youth and adult divisions play on June 27 and 28 with live music and open registration.
