Good morning, Bend. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study released Wednesday morning showed OSU‑Cascades contributed $89 million to Bend and Central Oregon communities by creating 701 jobs (Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson counties) and generating $6.6 million in state and local taxes. The university (established in 2001) now offers 24 undergraduate degrees and several graduate programs and will expand with a 24‑acre innovation district to boost local economic growth.  Bend Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfire season arrived in Central Oregon after the fast-growing Euston Fire spread northwest of Redmond on Tuesday. Claire Elmer spoke with local fire departments Wednesday—her report aired at 5:00 p.m. on KTVZ News.  KTVZ
  • Today at 10 a.m. firefighters plan to ignite a controlled burn on up to three acres west of Sunriver as part of a fire investigator training course — the burn may cause smoke that could affect local residents, so they are advised to close windows and doors.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Deschutes County Sheriff Employees Association called for Sheriff Kent van der Kamp to resign immediately and reimburse legal fees from his 2024 election defense—citing repeated dishonesty that led to his placement on the Brady List. County commissioners and the mayor have also urged his removal, and van der Kamp said he will retire by the end of August and plan to appeal.  Central Oregon Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Tuesday at Ponderosa Park, the county board of commissioners and the public health advisory board honored health worker Lordes Reyes (Healthy Families Coordinator at the Latino Community Association) and organization Volunteers in Medicine (which provided over $155 million in treatment to more than 15,000 patients since 2004) with the 2025 Health Heroes Awards.  KTVZ
