COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shepherd's House Ministries in Bend began its Protein Power Drive on May 29—aimed at restocking protein supplies after a 17% federal food support cut—to help provide nutritious meals. The week-long drive accepts donations of chicken, beef, pork, eggs, and peanut butter at drop-off locations in Bend and Redmond.  Central Oregon Daily

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A La Pine paddleboarder died on May 29 after getting trapped in the rapids at Pringle Falls on the Deschutes River—first responders arrived after a 911 call at 1 p.m. but could not reach her before her body was recovered downstream.  Bend Bulletin

CRIME NEWS

  • A wanted Bend man, David Alan Mills, who evaded an April police manhunt for burglary and weapon charges, tried to flee a Walmart shoplifting incident on May 29 by driving from the front passenger seat—he was caught and now faces charges of shoplifting, driving with a suspended license, and meth possession.  KTVZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Heather Bailey will join High Desert Middle School as principal for the 2025-26 school year starting July 1 — she leaves Kraxberger Middle School and replaces Jessica Reilly, who is moving to a new district role. Kelly Schmidt will become the principal at Cascade Middle School beginning July 1 — she brings experience from Wilsonville High School and other local districts.  Bend Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A wildfire broke out Friday north of Skyliners Road, about four miles west of Bend and burned around two acres before crews built a hand line to stop its advance, with smoke visible in a wide area & no structures threatened. Officials reported that three engines, a hand crew, and air resources responded while the cause is under investigation.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A four-block stretch of Staats Street in downtown Bend will close Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., for a major utility and paving project—crews will replace old water lines, fire hydrants, and storm drains and lay new asphalt between Colorado and Kansas avenues.  Central Oregon Daily
  • On May 29th, the Oregon House unanimously passed a bill that removes deadlines for filing civil lawsuits over sexual abuse to let survivors seek justice at any time—lawmakers shared personal accounts to highlight the need—and the measure now heads to the Senate.  The Oregonian
