- ➤ The estate of Celia Lenore Hess filed a wrongful death suit in Multnomah County Circuit Court on May 27 after Hess died from heat stroke on August 30, 2024, when staff left her outside in near-100 degree heat. The suit, filed by her daughter Melisa Finch’s attorneys, names Frontier Senior Living + Aspen Ridge Retirement Community and seeks $12 million in damages. Source Weekly

- ➤ El Sancho will reopen its restaurant on Bend’s east side on June 2—located at 335 NE Dekalb Ave—after it burned down about a year ago. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ Sisters Bakery has launched its Americana Fare menu from Memorial Day to Labor Day, featuring unique pastries like S'Mores donuts and Loaded Denver Danishes that highlight classic American flavors. The bakery will host its Americana Fair on July 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — a family-friendly event with balloon animal artists and face painters. Central Oregon Daily
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Beginning June 1st, the Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close 40 acres of public land between Bend and Redmond due to growing public health, safety, and environmental concerns from unauthorized long-term non-recreational camping—this closure aims to address issues from trash build-up, human waste, and damage to native vegetation. BLM will assess the area after closing to plan repairs, restoration, and set a re-opening date. KTVZ
- ➤ The Bureau of Land Management announced that campfires, charcoal fires, or any open flames will be banned on parts of the Crooked, Deschutes, John Day and White rivers and on sections of Lake Billy Chinook and Lake Simtustus beginning June 1 and lasting through Oct. 15 to reduce wildfire risk. Commercial stoves using propane or liquid fuel are allowed while violators face fines up to $1,000 or up to 12 months in jail—officials said the measure protects public and employee safety. - ➤ The Oregon Department of Emergency Management urges residents to prepare for wildfire season by assembling a go-kit and planning several evacuation routes—officials have set three levels: Green for being ready, Yellow for preparing to leave, and Red for immediate evacuation—and advise everyone to sign up for local emergency alerts. - ➤ On May 5, commissioners Tony DeBone and Patti Adair maintained control of redistricting by voting to keep committee appointment power—Commissioner Phil Chang objected to the move. They will choose committee members by next month to draft a new district map for a ballot measure set for May 2026 that will affect the 2028 election. Bend Bulletin
