COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bend’s Orchard Park now features a new hummingbird garden – planted with native high desert plants by local volunteer groups including Pollinator Pathway Bend, East Cascades Bird Alliance, and Wild Birds Unlimited – to support pollinators this Memorial Day weekend.  KTVZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on U.S. Highway 97 north of La Pine has closed all southbound lanes and reduced northbound lanes to one — emergency crews are on the scene as the Oregon Department of Transportation assists with traffic management and advises drivers to seek alternate routes.  KTVZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Angelina Kruse demanded that court lawyers say her son Ryan Toliver’s name instead of ‘the victim’ during the sentencing of Jennifer Rosalie Gentry for selling heroin linked to his 2018 overdose in Redmond — a step meant to honor his life as he had just started a new job — in a federal case.  The Oregonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A slimmed-down bill passed a key committee to add climate lessons to the academic standards for science, health, history, geography, economics, and civics. The State Board of Education will include these lessons during future revisions starting in 2026 — the bill will soon go to a Senate vote.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training voted unanimously to strip Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp of his certification for life—this decision came just days after he was expelled from the state sheriff’s association.  KBND
  • The Oregon Department of Forestry’s wildfire protection budget will rise to $127 million this year—an increase of 12% from last year—to fund statewide preparedness and air resources including $20 million for emergency fires. The U.S. Forest Service has hired 9,444 wildland firefighters nationally, reaching 84% of its target, and plans to add 1,429 more in the Pacific Northwest.  Bend Bulletin
  • A new report found that the state transportation agency used old software and had unclear lines of authority — problems that led to rising project costs and budgeting errors — which have delayed projects. Lawmakers will use the findings Tuesday to plan a big funding package for fixing roads and bridges.  The Oregonian
