CULTURE NEWS

  • Pianist Paula Dreyer will perform a live piano concert Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the lava caves at Juniper Preserve as part of the Piano Flow Live series — attendees may sit near the piano or use wireless headphones while watching live art by Paula Alan Bennett.  Bend Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fishery officials extended the spring Chinook salmon season on the Columbia River after counts surpassed expectations—more than 100,000 fish have passed Bonneville Dam with forecasts now at about 155,500 for the season. Downstream fishing will continue until June 12 while upriver fishing opens today and runs until June 15.  Central Oregon Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redmond City Council has approved contracts for the Northpoint Vista project on a 40-acre site between NE Maple Ave. and NE Kingwood Ave. to build over 400 homes that include 30% affordable housing. The city awarded a $4,262,715 infrastructure contract on May 6 and selected Pahlisch Homes for market-rate development with work set to start in late June and phases of construction beginning in spring and summer of 2026—full community amenities like parks and trails will be added later.  Source Weekly
  • The City of Bend will open applications on June 5 for $5.7 million in affordable housing funds pending City Council approval on June 4. Nonprofit and for-profit developers will join a virtual pre-application training on May 28 and must direct technical questions to the city’s housing office.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Oregon lawmakers passed House Bill 2698 on Tuesday to raise the homeownership goal to 65% and add over 30,000 new homeowners by 2030—lawmakers also require a tracking dashboard for homeownership gaps by race and ethnicity and the bill now heads to Gov. Tina Kotek’s desk for action.  Central Oregon Daily

  • Trauma survivors rejoined nurses and doctors at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend on Tuesday during a healing event that celebrated their recovery—patients from across the region gathered and were honored amid the challenges of our outdoor lifestyle.  Central Oregon Daily

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Bend's new beer festival, Bend Brews & Beyond, will be held Saturday and Sunday at Drake Park with local breweries, non-alcoholic drink makers & food trucks after last year's Bend Brewfest was canceled. Organizer Brian Yaeger designed the two-day event with meet the makers sessions and a pants contest to offer locals a fresh taste of the festival experience, and tickets are available online.  Bend Bulletin

  • Impulse Elite in Bend won state championships on May 11 when two of its teams clinched titles at the Pinnacle Cheerleading Championships in Las Vegas— the gym trains kids from age five to teens in cheer, dance, tumbling and gymnastics. The new facility is quickly building a team known for its strong spirit and fast progress.  KTVZ
