COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bend's new Deschutes Central Library officially opened today. The 103,343 sqft building blends modern technology, art, and community spaces with energy efficient features (including solar panels) to serve families, teens, and adults.  Bend Bulletin
  • Cascades East Transit will launch Try Transit Week from June 1 to 5 by offering free rides on Bend fixed routes and Redmond Flex Routes A and B during commute hours (6:00-8:00 a.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m.) across Central Oregon. Pop-up events at transit hubs will promote public transit use.  KTVZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • OperaBend presents Menotti’s opera 'The Medium' at Wille Hall in Central Oregon Community College on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.; admission is free and donations are welcome.  Bend Bulletin
  • Tommy Guerrero, along with Josh Lippi and El Diablitos, will perform live today at Volcanic Theatre Pub starting 8 p.m. at 70 SW Century Drive (doors open at 7 p.m. with advance tickets at $20 and door tickets at $30).  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend’s Hayden Homes Amphitheater is set to host 50 concerts from early June through October, featuring country, rock, and electronic acts (including Bailey Zimmerman and Jack Johnson) in the Old Mill District along the Deschutes River.  Bend Bulletin
  • Silver Moon Brewing presents a psychedelic pop rock concert with Vinyl Williams, HOTT MT and Sun Dive. The event takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. at 24 NW Greenwood Ave in Bend — tickets are $15.  Bend Bulletin

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Oregon economists warned Tuesday that soaring oil prices and rising inflation are reshaping growth by straining wages & slowing job prospects. Their forecast update, previewed ahead of a legislative review, suggests higher energy costs could dampen economic recovery.  Central Oregon Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU-Cascades opened its new 1,500 sqft OP:EN studio in Edward J. Ray Hall — a state-funded space for designing outdoor gear. Students use industrial sewing machines and 3D printers to work on projects and collaborate with local industry partners.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A community wildfire preparedness event will be held Wednesday, May 27 at Discovery Corner (1125 NW Ochoa Dr., corner of Skyline Ranch Road) in Bend. Local agencies including Bend Emergency Management and Bend Police will provide home hardening and evacuation tips from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters approved fire district levies in Cloverdale and Sisters-Camp Sherman yesterday while Alfalfa voters rejected the measure — the new funding will hire firefighters and EMTs to boost rural emergency services for the next five years.  Bend Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • As summer heat rises in the High Desert, Volunteers in Medicine advises residents, especially young children and older adults, to drink 6 to 8 ounces of water to prevent dehydration.
