- ➤ Be and Belong, a new support group in Bend, is hosting its first meeting today at Cottage 33 — 33 NW Louisiana Avenue — from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The group, founded by Sandra Lindsay, will hold additional sessions on June 4 and June 25 to support those struggling with suicide or grieving a loss. - ➤ Police closed a busy southwest Redmond street and placed two schools in secure status after a burglary and domestic violence suspect, identified as Tyler J. Kane of Bend with multiple charges, eluded capture — authorities urge anyone with information to call non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 — and the area is now clear. KTVZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bend High School’s future auditorium will have a balcony, 1,400 seats — and a larger lobby than the old facility — with design plans revealed last week at an open house in the school gym. The new auditorium, set to replace the demolished building, will be built in the same space with construction starting in summer 2026 and finishing by fall 2028. Bend Bulletin

- ➤ Today, firefighters in Deschutes National Forest will conduct prescribed burns near Bend, Crescent, and Sisters—resulting in smoke that may lead to road and trail closures. Residents are advised to keep windows closed and use caution while driving as smoke impacts visibility overnight and early in the morning. Central Oregon Daily

- ➤ Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp was expelled from the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association’s board after a report accused him of lying under oath and falsifying records—officials said the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training will decide on his certification on Thursday. The Oregonian
- ➤ Local fire agencies including Bend Fire and Rescue said they may receive fewer weather forecasts if the National Weather Service ends its night shift at the Pendleton office — a change that could affect burn decisions based on wind predictions above 25 mph. Agencies plan to end debris burning season on May 31 amid growing concerns over reduced forecast information. Central Oregon Daily

- ➤ At the Class 5A girls state golf championships held Tuesday at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, three Central Oregon teams earned top-eight finishes—Summit finished third with 742 strokes, Ridgeview placed fifth and Bend High ended eighth—while Redmond’s Payton Richardson was the top individual from the region, placing fourth at 18-over par.
