COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A survey from NeighborImpact showed that 2,108 people experienced homelessness across Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties in Central Oregon—up about 17% from last year. The report noted that while outreach funding helped some people move into stable housing, numbers rose in several communities including Bend and Redmond. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ Play Theory Cafe, a new indoor play and learning space for young children and their caregivers, will open on May 30 at 2221 NE 3rd St, offering safe play areas, interactive STEM exhibits, and local food options + it aims to support families in a region with limited childcare choices. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Deschutes National Forest will begin a 422-acre prescribed burn today at 10 a.m. on Forest Service Road 18, 15 miles southeast of Bend if conditions remain favorable. Temporary closures of parts of Trail 40 and Trail 50 and several three-digit routes are planned for safety—residents near the Camp II Trailhead should keep windows closed to lessen smoke exposure. - ➤ City officials in Bend now have the option to join lawsuits against the federal government to secure grant funds for improvement projects—an avenue available if funding is at risk. KBND
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ At Caldera High School on Saturday, May 19, Summit’s Kate Bonetto won the girls singles title and Caldera’s Aiden Cruz claimed the boys singles title in the IMC tennis championships—earning both players a berth at the state championships.
