- ➤ The Bend Park and Recreation District is scheduling summer volunteer days for its Natural Resources and Trails team, with the first event on May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon on Manzanita Trail featuring litter pick up, raking, moving rocks and weed pulling. Future projects are set for June 7, June 28, July 19, August 16 and October 18—tools are provided while participants should bring gloves, water, sunscreen and appropriate clothing. Bend Bulletin
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Last month, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office issued 33 citations during a distracted driving crackdown as part of its campaign Put the phone away or pay—aimed at reducing mobile phone use while driving. Central Oregon Daily
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Bend's first Brews & Beyond brew fest will feature over 50 Oregon-based breweries offering beers, ciders, kombucha and non-alcoholic drinks. The event will have live music and the debut of the Oregon Drinking Pants Pageant, and it is seeking volunteers on Sunday (tickets include a souvenir mug and drink tokens). Central Oregon Daily
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ SELCO Community Credit Union awarded $77,500 in scholarships to 21 Oregon students, including two Bend students who each received $3,500 from a highly competitive field of applicants. All winners will attend a ceremony at SELCO headquarters in Springfield on May 22 — the awards are part of the SELCO Steps Up program to support diverse educational paths. KTVZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Workers finished installing a new waterline and paving a shared bike and pedestrian path on Olney Avenue yesterday as part of the improvement project. They will soon begin work on concrete, lighting, a sewer line and utilities—while the intersection of NW Wall Street and Olney Avenue remains closed through May. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ Construction on a new air traffic control tower at Bend Municipal Airport continues and it will be ready by October. The project is a partnership between the city, the FAA and Deschutes County — set to boost flight safety — and will help manage more than 140,000 takeoffs and landings a year — which shows the airport’s heavy use. - ➤ Bend FC girls won their state championship on May 13 and have been invited to the regional tournament in Boise—where they will face the best teams in the Pacific Northwest. Central Oregon Daily
