COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Oregon High Desert Classics will take place in Bend from July 8 to 12 at J Bar J Boys' Ranch. The event will include hunter-jumper competitions, food+ local vendors, and activities to raise funds for J Bar J Youth Services.  Bend Bulletin
  • Local expert Kathleen Leppert (a homeless services advocate) says rising rents and a reduced housing supply since the remote work boom have left many Bend residents without homes despite having jobs. She notes that the housing market shifted too fast for incomes to keep up.  Bend Bulletin
  • The new Bend Central Library opened on May 11 at 61956 SE Santorini Street in Stevens Ranch — a 100,000 sqft civic hub built to support local growth without requiring changes to the master plan.  KTVZ
  • Bend Park & Recreation District invites community members to volunteer for trail projects from May through October. The scheduled work days will include trash pickup, weed removal, and planting native species at parks across Bend.  Bend Bulletin

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Base Camp food truck lot will open in June on the west side with 12 trucks, a full bar, heated patio, event space and a giant projector screen for sports. Located next to Powder House Ski & Patio, the venue offers a 7,000 sqft building and 5,000 sqft outdoor area.  Central Oregon Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting Thursday, May 14, a weeklong series of live music events will take place in Central Oregon with shows from local and touring acts at venues including River’s Place (787 NE Purcell Blvd., Bend) and Silver Moon Brewing. The events continue through Wednesday, May 20 with varied pricing and times.  Bend Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU-Cascades announced that its Little Kits daycare will close on July 2 due to financial challenges, cutting about 70 childcare spots in Bend+ parents said the sudden decision has left families scrambling for alternatives.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters declared the Pine Mountain fire 100% contained Tuesday after prescribed burns spread and burned 2,589 acres near Bend in the Deschutes National Forest. Visitors are urged to remain cautious due to lingering hazards like debris and erosion.  The Oregonian
  • Starting today, campfire bans will be enforced on BLM lands along the Crooked, Deschutes, John Day - and White Rivers, as well as near Lake Billy Chinook and Lake Simtustus. Restrictions will expand Thursday to all BLM lands in Oregon and Washington, with officials warning record heat and dryness.  KBND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents can tour Bend’s new Public Works campus this Thursday, May 14, at NW Talus Place, a facility completed last fall at under $130 million. The event will offer tours of water testing labs, vehicle maintenance areas, and storm sewer sludge lots, plus food, drink, and local art displays.  Source Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • A retired Bend oncologist (Dr. Stephen Kornfeld) tested positive for hantavirus after treating cruise ship passengers and is now isolated at the biocontainment unit in Nebraska. He feels healthy (and authorities are monitoring him with test results expected between Wednesday and Friday).  Central Oregon Daily
