COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Romaine Village and local students will clear flammable debris every Monday through June — part of a grant-funded project that assists elderly and disabled homeowners in reducing wildfire risk ahead of season.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Deschutes Public Library opened its new Central Library in Bend Monday, May 11, and residents+ gathered to explore the facility on its opening day. The venue will host community programs and events in the coming months.  Central Oregon Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday evening, the 14th Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show took place at the Pavillion skating rink where 50 models showcased outfits made from repurposed materials to promote sustainability and support local schools, while vendors sold food & crafts at nearby tables.  Bend Bulletin

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, Oregon drivers see an average gasoline price of $5.27, which is 8.1 cents more than last week & 30.4 cents above last month, according to GasBuddy. Diesel prices climbed slightly to $5.62 per gallon.  KTVZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Central Oregon must follow new fire restrictions as early fire season emerges; starting May 14, the BLM will ban fireworks and fire-starting materials on BLM lands while the Department of Forestry requires permits for yard debris burning on private property.  KTVZ
  • Central Oregon’s first big wildfire of 2026 is 85% contained after firefighters worked on Monday to mop up steep, rocky areas + the Pine Mountain Fire burned roughly 2,589 acres with public lands remaining closed.  Bend Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Charles Health System named Michael Hartke as its next president and CEO — the transition will take place on July 5 while Steve Gordon stays on through the third quarter to support the system during the change.  Bend Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bend United coach Ralph Lewis says that Athena Fairchild-Barnett (senior) remains a driving force on the lacrosse field with her all-around play and leadership, boosting the local team's performance this season. Her standout contributions highlight her key role as an attacker.  The Oregonian
  • Bend kayakers Chelsey Magness and Daniel Staudigel broke the speed record on the Willamette River in April when they paddled 150.4 miles nonstop from Eugene to West Linn in 17 hours and 44 minutes. They are using the feat as training for the Yukon 1000 race this summer — a 1,000-mile challenge.  Central Oregon Daily
