COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 100,000 sqft new Central Library in east Bend will open at 9 a.m. Monday for community use. The energy-efficient facility — featuring solar panels and 'Juniper,' an art sculpture by John Grade — offers reading areas, a coffee cafe, and versatile spaces for visitors.  Bend Bulletin
  • Redmond’s Brightside Animal Center will extend its hours to include Sundays starting June 7 from 10am to 5:30pm. The center will host a kickoff event with adoptable pets and vendor booths, and it plans new programs like a trap and release effort and an adventure day later.  Source Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU-Cascades announced that its Little Kits Early Care and Education Center will close on July 2 due to financial challenges (families may not automatically qualify for a new program). The university is seeking an independent provider to take over operations.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A prescribed burn in the Deschutes National Forest near Bend grew to 2,483 acres and was 15% contained Friday morning after spot fires escaped its control (the Pine Mountain Fire lies 14 miles southeast of Bend). Fire crews are building fuel breaks to protect Pine Mountain Observatory.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bend Police are advising drivers ahead of red light and speeding camera citations beginning May 15. The cameras (located at key intersections) will capture violations from failing to stop before the crosswalk or from speeding with fines ranging from $165 to $440; drivers should review posted guidance for more details.  Central Oregon Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • NeighborImpact is offering free HEPA air purifiers and weatherization services to income-qualified households in Central Oregon to improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency as wildfire season nears. Eligible homes can receive energy audits within two weeks to identify needed improvements.  KTVZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Summit boys volleyball team will begin OSAA playoffs on May 20 after a strong season with one loss. Now officially sanctioned, the team will meet tough opponents in quarterfinals (May 23) and state tournaments (May 29-30 at West Salem High School).  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend’s Leif Larwin, who earned four state titles and four Reser’s wins while remaining undefeated in local matches, is named a finalist for the 2025-26 boys wrestling athlete of the year, and high school sports writers will soon select the winner.  The Oregonian
