COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a five-year break, the National Association of Letter Carriers is bringing the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive back to Central Oregon on May 10. Residents can leave non-perishable food items by their mailboxes—local letter carriers from Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville will collect the donations and deliver them to NeighborImpact’s Food Bank for distribution.  KTVZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Bend Police arrested 27-year-old Phillip Matthew Howard Evans on Wednesday after he was detained on suspicion of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon following the discovery of a middle-aged man fatally injured on NE Emerson Ave at 7:16 p.m.—an autopsy took place on May 8 to help identify the victim.  Source Weekly
  • Bend police say a Canadian man, Cole Nikolaus Sinclair, was arrested last December under Canada's extradition process for the July 18 homicide of 28-year-old Evelyn Jeanette Weaver whose SUV was found in Klamath Falls two days later and urge anyone who recognizes him to call 541-693-6911.  Source Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Katie Tiktin, a teacher at Pilot Butte Middle School in Bend, will receive the National Award of Valor on July 7 for safely removing a loaded handgun from a 12-year-old student on October 21, 2024—her quick actions helped avert a potential school shooting—while Officer Jabral Johnson will be honored with a regional Exceptional Service Award. NASRO announced the awards and will present additional honors at its National School Safety Conference in Grapevine, Texas.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Bend approved Phase 2 of its Transportation Fee on May 7 and will raise monthly fees—single-family accounts will pay $10.50 while non-residential rates will vary by building size—to double annual revenue for road maintenance and other transportation projects. The new fee will take effect on July 1 and first appear on August bills.  KTVZ
  • Timed reservation tickets for Lava River Cave are available starting today for the 2025 season from mid-May through mid-September, and visitors must book a two-hour entry block via Recreation.gov ($2 service fee applies per transaction). The cave opens on May 16 with tickets divided between a rolling seven-day window and a 24-hour booking period.  KTVZ

  • In April, Bend’s median home price reached a record $832,000 with more than one-third of homes selling for over $1 million (146 sales) and an average market time of 23 days (Beacon Appraisal Group data).  Central Oregon Daily
