- ➤ The popular Shevlin Park fishing pond—west of Bend—will close May 11-15 for a cleanup project to remove years of weeds and plant buildup, improve water quality, and protect fish and shoreline habitat. Central Oregon Daily
- ➤ Starting June 17, Cascades East Transit will offer buses from Hawthorne Station to Mt. Bachelor’s bike park, stopping at five trailheads including Swampy Lakes and Mt. Bachelor West Village. Riders pay $10 round-trip for up to 20 bikes + riding from 8 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. until Sept. 6. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ The splash pad at Alpenglow Park opened Thursday as warm temperatures pushed into the 80s, giving kids a fun way to cool off. It is open daily (10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) with a nearby playground, bouldering area and off-leash dog area. Central Oregon Daily

- ➤ Midcity Smashburger is leaving its longtime spot at Waypoint Hotel for Base Camp, a new food truck lot next to Powder House Ski & Patio on the west side late in June. The move joins nine other vendors. Central Oregon Daily

- ➤ Bend Senior High teacher Heidi Friesen is among eight finalists in the 9th-12th grade category for the OnPoint Community Credit Union Oregon Educator of the Year award. A win would cover her rent and add $2,500 to her school's funding. Central Oregon Daily
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A prescribed burn east of Bend started Tuesday but flared into the Pine Mountain Fire—a 1,500-acre blaze 14 miles southeast that turned uncontrolled on Thursday, May 7. Firefighters added extra crews as the area remained closed to traffic while mop-up operations + patrol efforts continued. Source Weekly
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road reopened Thursday morning after a mild winter and lighter snowpack gave residents earlier access to high-elevation recreation areas. County officials warned visitors to expect early season conditions — including snowy patches and muddy roads — while cleanup and hazard tree removal continue. Bend Bulletin
- ➤ Deschutes County Sheriff's Office will test its emergency alert system at 1 p.m. on May 13 as part of a campaign to prepare residents for fire season. More than 70,000 county residents (all enrolled for alerts) are encouraged to update their contact information before the test. Bend Bulletin
