BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bend’s famous restaurant 900 Wall closed on Monday night after 17 years of serving local diners and creating many memories. The Downtown Bend Business Association is now looking for a new operator for the historic space built in the 1920s — the restaurant’s final post said it had served its last order of fried green beans.  Central Oregon Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend will host 50 summer concerts starting May 19—featuring acts such as James Taylor, Sting 3.0, Brad Paisley, and Neil Young among others through September 18. The outdoor venue on the Deschutes River remains a top local spot for live music.  The Oregonian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bend Park and Recreation District has opened applications for its Kids Inc. afterschool childcare program for the 2025-26 school year, available to kindergarten through 5th graders at all Bend elementary schools except Amity Creek and Westside Village until 5:30 p.m. Parents must apply by May 16 and note that full-time fees will rise from $265 to $285 and part-time fees from $135 to $142.50—selections will be made by lottery with deposits due by June 9.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Skyliners Lodge in the Deschutes National Forest will continue operating this summer under NatureConnect—a local outdoor learning nonprofit—as it takes over managing events and educational programs while planning a roof renovation with a $128,000 Visit Bend grant for fire resistant cedar shakes in August. The nonprofit will rent the 88-year-old lodge for educational and private events to fund field trips and outdoor learning.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend-La Pine Schools has invited the community to an open house on May 15 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the main gym to review the preliminary design for the new Bend Senior High Auditorium; school representatives and BBT Architects will answer questions and collect feedback via an online form + design work continues with city permits as construction is set to begin in June and finish by fall.  KTVZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Deschutes County’s Fire Free days began over the weekend at Knott Landfill in Bend. On Friday afternoon south of La Pine, firefighters quickly contained a 2.4-acre wildfire — a sign that fire safety remains a top priority.  KBND

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Jonathan Bach, a local journalist who grew up in Bend rentals and owned homes in Terrebonne, has published his first book—High Desert, Higher Costs: Bend and the Housing Crisis in the American West—with OSU Press based on his study of local housing challenges. He will discuss his research and speak with community members on May 17 at OSU-Cascades Ray Hall Atrium.  Bend Bulletin
