- ➤ Deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office showed that six new homeless camps have appeared outside La Pine after Bend’s largest encampment was forced to close for wildfire mitigation. A cleanup with county jail inmates is scheduled for May 10 (as part of a regional partnership) to address the growing safety concerns (especially near new housing developments). KTVZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Oregon Department of Forestry’s Central Oregon District reported Friday that escaped debris burn piles have caused wildfires up to 30 acres when burn piles thought to be out rekindled, and fire officials warn residents that not following local burn instructions—like monitoring weather and fully extinguishing burn piles—can lead to citations and extra costs. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality announced that the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program will reopen on May 22 to give up to $2,500 for new electric vehicle purchases and higher rebates for qualifying low- and moderate-income households—applications will be accepted only for cars bought after May 22 with funds drawn from state vehicle taxes and an EPA grant. - ➤ Multiple road construction projects will affect Bend area roads from May 4 to 10 as Deschutes County, the US Forest Service and the city of Bend plan paving on Powell Butte Highway and Nelson Road, a bridge replacement on Hamehook Road and roundabout construction at the Deschutes Market Road intersection along with grading near US 97 that will divert traffic until May 15—seasonal closures on Cascade Lakes and Paulina Lake Roads are expected to remain in place until Memorial Day. - ➤ Senator Jeff Merkley will hold three town halls on May 10 — in Madras at 10 a.m., in Prineville at 1 p.m., and in Sisters at 5:30 p.m. where he will join Rep. Janelle Bynum — as part of his ongoing tour across Oregon’s 36 counties following a Senate scheduling change. KTVZ

- ➤ Central Oregon’s Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium will be held on June 14 in downtown Bend — elite men and women riders will compete for equal purses of $20,000 while the streets close at 9 a.m.; races will run from noon until 8:45 p.m. with additional events including a kiddie crit at 4:45 p.m. and a mile run at 5:15 p.m. Bend Bulletin
