COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the U.S. Forest Service closes a section of the Deschutes National Forest southeast of Bend for wildfire work, forcing more than 60 homeless campers to remove their vehicles or face fines and jail—campers have until midnight to leave their spots.  The Oregonian
  • Deschutes Children's Foundation will host the Ripples Gala on May 10 at Tetherow Pavilion to help local nonprofits face funding cuts—live music, auctions, and dinner are part of the event plans.  Central Oregon Daily

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Mid Oregon Credit Union opened its new headquarters in Bend’s Old Mill district with a ribbon‐cutting ceremony that marked the debut of a 16,000‐square‐foot mass timber building—built on the old tool shed site—to offer modern banking services. The building features a drive‐thru ATM and teller lane on the first floor and offices on upper floors while costing over $9.5 million.  KTVZ

CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect was arrested at the La Pine Post Office today just before 2:00 p.m. after a viral video showed him striking a small dog with a shovel — he faces charges for 1st degree aggravated animal abuse and 2nd degree animal abuse — and three dogs were taken into custody.  Central Oregon Daily
  • On April 30, armed police officers with two armored vehicles surrounded a southeast Bend apartment to demand that the person inside come out — they warned that force might be used — and two individuals surrendered with their hands up, one of whom was arrested.  KTVZ
  • Bend Police responded to a standoff on Wednesday afternoon at a SE Bend apartment near SE Fourth Street and McKinley Avenue — using armored vehicles and drawing their weapons — before two individuals were detained when they exited with their hands up.  KTVZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caldera High teacher Bekki Tucker was named the 2025 Oregon Financial Empowerment Award winner for her work in creating a personal finance curriculum for the Bend-La Pine School District. She will receive $1,500 and her school $500 (with additional $500 in scholarship funds provided to selected students) as Oregon prepares to implement a new personal finance graduation requirement.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge denied a temporary restraining order and allowed officials to evict a group of 60 to 80 homeless campers from a section of Deschutes National Forest southeast of Bend today as part of a restoration plan to reduce wildfire risk. Campers, including many who are disabled, face uncertainty about where to move their belongings since relocation support has not materialized.  The Oregonian
  • A federal judge denied a temporary restraining order that would have stopped the planned closure of thousands of acres in the Deschutes National Forest and the removal of homeless campers near Bend. Forest Service officials will close the China Hat Road area today for the Cabin Butte Vegetation Management Project — people who remain may face fines or jail.  Bend Bulletin

  • Downtown Bend will host the Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium on June 14 as a bike race on a closed course organized by Horner Cycling Foundation. The event will offer a $20,000 prize purse and will include junior races for children starting at age nine.  Source Weekly
